Why Afghan saffron
beats Iran
Afghanistan's Herat province — specifically the Ghorian district — produces saffron that consistently tests higher in safranal (aroma), picrocrocin (taste), and crocin (colour) than Iranian counterparts. The altitude, temperature variation, and soil composition in this region create ideal conditions.
At international competitions run by the International Saffron Research Network, Afghan saffron has taken gold multiple years running — beating Spanish, Greek, and Iranian entries.
Despite this quality, Afghan saffron remains significantly underpriced compared to Iranian saffron in Western markets — largely a branding and distribution issue, not a quality one. This creates an opportunity for importers who want premium product at below-premium prices.
