Does Afghanistan Have Visa on Arrival?
Afghanistan operates a limited visa-on-arrival system, but it functions very differently from what tourists experience in, say, Thailand or Turkey. Most foreign tourists visiting Afghanistan on an organised tour should apply for their visa in advance — doing so makes the entry process significantly smoother and removes uncertainty on arrival.

Who Can Get Afghanistan Visa on Arrival?
Afghanistan's visa-on-arrival facility is primarily available to:
- Afghan-origin passport holders from diaspora countries (e.g., Afghan-Americans, Afghan-Swedes, Afghan-Germans) may be eligible for simplified entry processes.
- OIC member state nationals — citizens of some Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member states may have access to simplified visa procedures.
- Journalists and NGO workers with official credentials and relevant organisation documentation.
- Travellers with pre-arranged invitation letters — in practice, having documentation from a recognised local company (like Go Kabul) significantly facilitates entry.
For most Western tourists (EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.), advance visa application is strongly recommended. While technically some may be able to get a visa at Kabul airport, the process is unpredictable and inconsistent. Apply in advance.
How to Apply for an Afghan Tourist Visa (Advance)
The standard process for Western tourists applying in advance:
- Contact Go Kabul and book your tour. We issue an official invitation letter in Afghan, which is required for the visa application.
- Locate your nearest Afghan embassy or consulate. Applications are processed in person or by post at the Afghan diplomatic mission for your country.
- Prepare your documents: valid passport (6+ months validity), completed visa application form, passport-sized photos (usually 2), invitation letter from Go Kabul, proof of accommodation (provided by us), travel insurance certificate, return flight booking.
- Submit application and pay the fee. Typically $50–$100 depending on nationality and processing speed. Processing takes 2–4 weeks standard; express service available at some embassies.
- Receive your visa sticker in your passport and book your flights.
Start the process 6–8 weeks before your intended travel date to allow for processing time and any delays.
Entry Points for Afghanistan
The main entry points for international tourists are:
- Kabul International Airport (KBL) — primary entry for most tourists. Flights from Dubai, Istanbul, Delhi, Islamabad, and a handful of other cities.
- Mazar-i-Sharif Airport (MZR) — limited international connections but used by some regional travellers.
- Herat Airport (HEA) — international connections to Iran and Gulf states.
- Land borders — Torkham (Pakistan side), Chaman (Pakistan side), Islam Qala (Iran side). These are used primarily by local/regional travellers and require coordination. Go Kabul can assist Pakistan-based travellers entering via Torkham. See our Pakistan guide.
For most tourists we recommend flying into Kabul. Go Kabul arranges airport pickup for all tour guests.
Visa Length and Extension
- Standard tourist visa: 30 days, single entry
- Extension: Possible via the Ministry of Interior in Kabul, but this adds complexity. Go Kabul can assist. Most tours are 5–10 days, well within the standard visa period.
- Multiple entry: Available in some cases, request specifically when applying
Pakistani Travellers — Special Considerations
Pakistani nationals have unique access arrangements to Afghanistan due to historical ties and the Torkham/Chaman land crossings. Pakistani passport holders may be able to enter Afghanistan without a pre-arranged visa in some circumstances, particularly for short stays and land border crossings. Dubai is the main hub for flights to Kabul. UAE residents — including Afghan expatriates based in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah — have good flight options (Fly Dubai and Kam Air both operate the route).
